Snoring and Sleep Apnea Relief
It is estimated that over 80 million people in North America snore while sleeping. Snoring may increase blood pressure, which could increase your risk of a stroke or heart attack! While we sleep, the muscles and soft tissues in the throat and mouth relax, making the airway smaller. This in turn can lead to snoring. Sleep studies have shown that excess body weight, heavy alcohol consumption and other sedatives have been shown to increase the severity of snoring, also. In some cases, a person actually stops breathing in their sleep, which is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
Conventional treatment has consisted of surgical techniques to remove structures such as the uvula, tonsils, and adenoids. These surgical procedures have shown only moderate success rates. Another option has been the CPAP machine. With this, you wear a mask on your face, which forces air into your lungs.
There is another option. By utilizing a custom fabricated dental device, we can move the jaw into a forward position, which increases the three-dimensional space in the airway. With the airway open, you can breath on your own and the snoring may stop. These dental devices may help you achieve a deeper, more restful sleep.
