Routine Cleaning

Patients who are in good oral health, with no signs of Periodontal Disease (gum disease) are typically seen every six months. During the visit, the patient can expect to receive a cancer screening of the neck, throat, and mouth, a comprehensive exam from the doctor, a cleaning, oral hygiene instructions, and any other specific treatment that may need to be taken care of at that time. These visits are extremely important, as preventive medicine is the best medicine!

Deep Cleaning

Periodontal Disease, also known as gum disease, is a chronic inflammation and infection of the gums, bone, and surrounding tissue. It is the major cause of adult tooth loss, and affects 3 out of 4 adults at some point in their life! Unlike most diseases that give us early warning signs, Periodontal Disease progresses silently, often with no pain at all. Recent research is now linking Periodontal Disease to strokes, heart attacks, lung infections, pre-term low-birth weight infants, and more! It may develop slowly or progress quite rapidly. Some of the warning signs include:

• Red, swollen, or tender gums
• Bleeding while brushing or flossing
• Persistent bad breath
• Loose or separating teeth
• Changes in your bite

In early stages, most treatment involves root planning and scaling, also known as periodontal therapy or deep cleaning. Special instruments are used to remove the bacteria and calculus that has formed in these deep pockets. Antibiotics and/or antimicrobials may also be used to supplement the effects of periodontal therapy. More advanced cases of Periodontal Disease may require surgical treatment.
